Up Is A Direction, Not A Location
A funny thing happened to me when I listened to this CD. I read the press kit before I put it in the player and was ready to discount it. Then once I listened to it I put it on repeat. Not because I was trying to get a sense of it for this review but because I really liked it from the beginning. The songs were put together well with thoughtful lyrics and a good recording.
Callow has put together a collection of a couple of previous EP releases and some new songs unique to this album. If you need comparisons I can't really give you a specific one but I can hear a bit of a lot of different artists in this one. Some Elvis Costello, Lyle Lovett, Prefab Sprout, and even maybe some replacements.
Some of the tracks that stand out for me are: Bobby Let Her Hair Down, King Beachy, Are You A Robot and Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now.
When you look up Callow in the dictionary, Webster defines it in one word. Immature. Not so for this record in my humble opinion. I recommend Up Is A Direction to anyone who digs alt country, with a little power pop thrown in. So give it a listen. I think you'll be glad you did. Skaboy
